Goals of
the course
Certificate 1 in
Coaching Athletics is the first qualification on the coaching athletics ladder
designed for people seeking entry into the profession of coaching athletics.
The qualification is designed to provide learners with an introduction to the
practical and theoretical aspects of coaching athletics, covering key aspects
of running, jumping and throwing.
This qualification is intended to provide the beginner coach with
an introduction to the knowledge, skills and understanding of safe and ethical
principles of effective coaching practices in athletics. It will equip the
trainer with the knowledge and tools to actively support a more senior
qualified and experienced coach of athletics at any level and the delivery of
pre-prepared sessions.
Objectives of the course
- Promote and establish working relationships and high standards of behavior with athletes, other coaches, parents and officials in the overall development of athletics.
- Demonstrate an ability to safely prepare, support and conclude athletics coaching sessions/activities using pre-planned session plans.
- Demonstrate an understanding of:
o Generic coaching skills
o Sport specific coaching skills
o Coach and performer/athlete development
o Good practice in coaching ethics
o Healthy and safety
o Basic introduction to athletics
- Prepare for the conducting of coaching activities
o establish a safe working environment
- Conduct prepared activities of the coaching sessions
o prepare the athletes for the coaching activities
o support athletes behavior
o deliver prepared activities
o conclude the activities
- Evaluate the effectiveness of coaching activities
o contribute to the evaluation of athletes
o continuously develop personal practice

Entry Criteria
- Should have passed grade 7 at a government recognized school
